How to Wear Spring and Summer 2021 Fashion Trends (and a Few I'll Pass on!)

Kristen Peterson

Every year at the beginning of spring and fall, I love looking at all the new fashion trends in magazines and online. It's one of my favorite ways to find outfit inspiration!

I don't like to buy into fads or of-the-moment trends, but I do enjoy seeing what's on the runway and figuring out how to transfer those looks to real life. It's fun to see if I have any of those items in my closet already and if there are some I simply can't replicate...and therefore can't live without. I especially like finding new looks that are truly unique but not too over-the-top. The goal is to look just different enough to stand out without looking dated.

With that in mind, here are the top 12 spring and summer 2021 fashion trends I'm seeing everywhere. As always, I'm sharing my honest opinions, tips, and tricks. I also curated my favorite shoppable picks for the upcoming season in LIKEtoKNOW.it, so you can see exactly how I plan to incorporate these trends into my own wardrobe!

1 Black and White.jpg

Black and white

I've always been a huge fan of the contrasting classic black and white look. It's sharp but not stuffy, appropriate in literally any setting and season, and ultra-flattering on everyone. You can pull it off effortlessly in so many ways — and probably with several things you already own.

2 Bra Tops.jpg

Bra tops

I won't even sugarcoat it; I'm not a fan of this trend. I don't mind a lacy bra top showing through a sheer blouse, but that's the only way I would wear this look. It's hard to imagine actually going anywhere or doing anything productive in just a bra!

3 Midriff Flossing.jpg

Midriff "Flossing"

This is another trend I just can't get on board with. If you're unfamiliar with midriff flossing, the term refers to skirts with several ties that wrap around the stomach. It seems like far too much work and personally, I don't need anything pinching my sides more than my waistband already does!

4 Floaty Maxi Dress.jpg

Floaty maxi dresses

Now here's a fashion trend I can (and do!) totally get into. It's amazing how perfectly put-together a maxi dress makes you look, isn't it? Almost without fail, I get several compliments when I'm out wearing one. Floaty maxi dresses have a distinct air of glamour, yet no outfit could be easier — just throw one on and go! I find maxis so cool (literally figuratively) and breezy, especially in the hot and humid Florida climate.

5 Trousers.jpg

Baggy trousers and statement pants

This trend may be difficult to embrace if you're a devoted skinny pants lover, but consider giving it a chance. I actually love a great pair of statement pants (or shoes or top or piece of jewelry for that matter...), but they're not entirely effortless. My caution with baggy or wide-leg pants is to not overdo it. Make sure the bagginess isn't too much and balance the look with a feminine, fitted top to make it more flattering.

6 Cape Details.jpg

Cape details

This look provides a lot of drama and I could take it or leave it at this point. I can certainly appreciate the whimsical escapism the designers are going for and it's always nice to have a bit of extra arm coverage, especially in chilly air conditioning. I love the look, I'm just not sure what event I'd need a cape for!

7 Sequins copy.jpg

Sequins

I really believe this is designers' way of offering fashionistas a much-needed mood boost. After all, what's more fun than a daytime disco?! I'm all about adding some shine to daytime looks, but be careful not to overdo it. I'd suggest wearing a sequin tee or blazer with staple pieces like jeans.

8 Cutouts Use.jpg

Cutouts

I love the open backs I'm seeing in a lot of items right now, and the smaller peekaboo details are also fun. Cutout dresses seem to be a bit too fussy and in my opinion, they're a "one-and-done" look, but I'm much more open to seeing this trend in bodysuits. Pare the drama down a bit with jeans or trousers and you have a winning look.

9 Corset.jpg

Corsets

Admittedly, I was quick to dismiss this trend until I looked at several variations. Generally speaking, I'm not a fan of wearing undergarments as clothing — but hey, that's what makes us all unique. I did, however, find a few corset looks that I thought were relevant and could translate to everyday life.

10 Fishnet.jpg

Fishnet clothing

Much like sequins and corsets, I think fishnet anything should be worn sparingly. There are so many variations now, so if you love the look of fishnet, purchase one versatile item you can wear in many ways. Think a lightweight cardigan or top that can be layered over other pieces.

11 Stripes.jpg

Stripes

I love all the stripes popping up for spring and summer! Stick with the classics and find lines and color combinations (like black and white — two birds, one stone!) that flatter your frame. I don't believe horizontal stripes always make you look larger, but some are so exaggerated that they look like prison uniforms, and that look isn't flattering on anyone!

12 Hoodies and Skirts.jpg

Hoodies and skirts

Maybe I'll come around in a season or two, but hopefully I don't have to, because I don't find this trend attractive at all. The idea is to make traditional ladylike looks more modern, but to me, it falls a bit flat.

Common Mistakes When Shopping for Clothes

How to Avoid the “Fashion Regret”

Have you ever experienced a fashion regret? Trust me you’re not alone! I've fallen into several traps over the years. I have been drawn in by designer names at times and I've purchased things on vacation I didn't really need. I even bought outfits for “that event” that I thought I might attend.  These kind of heat-of-the-moment purchases are what leads to fashion regrets.

Online ordering is another pitfall. Have you ever ordered something and been surprised by how different it looked in person? This is also similar to not trying things on in the store while shopping. There’s no way to know if it will fit well, or suit us, until we get home. Add a sale to the mix and you’ve got yourself a minefield of bad ideas.

So how do we avoid these regrets? How do we shop for good style investments?

When I buy clothes, I want to make good investments. I want the clothes to be timeless in style, to last a long time, and to spend more time on me than on the hanger. I have learned how to do this well the hard way. There isn’t anything worse than making a purchase, then regretting it and feeling like I just wasted hard earned money. I have a few questions to keep in mind while you’re shopping to ensure that you won’t make another Fashion Regret.

Untitled design (85).jpg

Download my free Stylist In My Pocket Guide below. It’s my favorite fashion tool in my pocket that I use on my shopping trips.

Here are some questions I like to think about before making a fashion purchase.

Does it fit my body well?

I can’t even count how many times in the past when I have purchased an item of clothing, only to realize it doesn't fit properly. One recommendation I consistently share with my clients is to try things on to save you the hassle of a return. If you are planning on making countless alterations, you may never be satisfied with the final product. If you are trying to make a decision between sizes it may be best to pass on the items and not purchase at all.

Will I be comfortable wearing this item?

I often pass on wearing an outfit knowing that is uncomfortable. When I decide what to wear I will ask myself a few questions. Is the jacket too snug in the shoulders making it difficult to drive? Can I walk more than 10 steps without holding onto my husband? When you make a fashion purchase you want to make sure your purchase is comfortable. Move around in an item. Sit, cross your legs, bend squat do whatever you do on a daily basis to be sure the item you are contemplating is comfy. Wear shoes around the department store and don’t just walk on carpeted areas, walk on hard floors too. If there is any doubt, leave it at the store!

IMG_5974.jpeg

Does this match MY style?

Have you made a purchase based on styles that you admire on other women, rather then the style you know and love? My clients have shared so many similar stories about their fashion regrets based on that same feeling. I encourage my clients to experiment with style, but when it comes to making a commitment to a new look, experiment with one item at a time. Know YOUR OWN STYLE first and think about if you would really wear this new look before making the purchase.

Does it fit my lifestyle?

Take a moment to really think about your lifestyle….

The early morning school run, cleaning the house, sitting at a desk all afternoon; are your clothes built for this? If you’re not likely to wear your pearls and Chanel to the grocery store, it may be best to stick to some basic staples. On the other hand, if you’re always out on the town or at dinner parties, do you really need another pair of jeans? When you know YOUR style that matches YOUR lifestyle you will see yourself making less mistakes.

Can I afford it?

Working out if you can afford something goes deeper than the money in your purse. Can you afford to wear the outfit regularly without fear that you’ll ruin it? Can you afford to get it repaired if you do? Sometimes we treat ourselves to clothes that we never end up wearing, because we’re afraid of wasting that money. But clothes are made to be worn, so find a comfortable price range and stick to it.

Do I have a place to wear it?

A big factor in why a lot of our garments lay unworn, is because we buy them for an occasion that may never come. I see many formal dresses that I feel are perfect for weddings and dinner parties, but I tell myself to hold back until I actually have the event to attend.

Does it fit a purpose, and fill a gap in my wardrobe?

Now here is a tip for you that will change your shopping experience. Go to the store when you need something will save you a lot of time and money. Pinpointing what you need and why you need it, will help you avoid repetitive buying. Hold the item you’re interested in and ask yourself; what purpose will this item fulfill? Where will I wear it? Will I wear it often? Is it something I don’t already own? Is there a deeper reason to purchasing it than ‘I just want it’?

P.S I offer a Virtual Styling App that you can load your entire wardrobe and scroll through as you’re shopping!

Can I wear it with at least 3 other things in my wardrobe?

Three is the magic number! Before you buy an item, think about what you have at home to pair with it. Imagine what the garment will look like with 2-3 other pieces. Can you match this item with your favorite jacket? Or does the top fit with your favorite skirt? If you can pair this item with least 2-3 items, you will be more satisfied with this purchase.

Don’t fall for that BOGO sale every time! Do I really want this item, or is it just part of a tempting deal?

Impulse sale buying can definitely lead to fashion regrets and clothes you don’t wear. How often do you buy clothes that are part of a buy-one-get-one-free deal? That free item...do you wear it often? Deals often trick us into thinking we are saving money! Don’t fall for it if you weren’t planning on buying the item anyway, you’re only spending more money, and giving up more space in your closet. Closet space is so valuable so think about that when a sales sign catches you.

Does the brand name matter in my closet?

It can be easy to be drawn to an item because it’s a name brand. The newest “It” bag or The must have designer shoes of the season are so beautiful and on everyone’s wish list. Does it mean we have to have them or are you drawn to them because of the logo? Imagine taking the name/logo off the item. Would it still be as appealing? This might save you a few dollars when you get tempted by that favorite brand name.

How Just Getting "Dressed Up" Can Make the Holidays Feel More Special

Kristen Peterson

Can you believe that Christmas is this week?! Even though there were several points when it felt like 2020 might never end, here we are – we made it! While the holidays undoubtedly look very different this year, it's important to remember that this is still a very special time. The holiday season is many people's favorite time of year and more than ever before, we should embrace our most cherished traditions and make things especially memorable.

If you're not getting together with your family and friends as you normally would during the holidays, it's easy for it to feel like any other day. However, that's exactly why you should make it a point to do something extra special! Even though we may not physically be with our loved ones this year, there are several things we can do to feel more connected with them and boost our own moods in the process.

Importance of Getting Dressed.png

Recently I conducted a poll on my Instagram account, where I asked if everyone was really just wearing loungewear these days. I was shocked at the final result: all but one of the answers was yes! Believe it or not, how we dress – even if we're not leaving the house – has a tremendous effect on our mood, self-esteem, and even productivity.

According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, "Researchers studying links between clothes, brain activity and productivity have long found that dressing up for work can improve your performance." This phenomenon is called enclothed cognition and I actually discussed it in an older blog post, "I. Feel. Pretty." Essentially, enclothed cognition refers to the signals that clothes send to the human brain. It goes far beyond just work and productivity; enclothed cognition research proves that simply getting dressed can pull you out of a funk and completely turn your day around.

In today's world when so many people work from home, children are in remote school, it's cold and dreary around much of the country, and you can have virtually anything delivered in a matter of hours, it's fairly common to not leave the house for days at a time. Add to that the totally normal "winter blues" and Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, defined by Mayo Clinic as "a type of depression that's related to changes in seasons," and you have a perfect recipe for rarely getting dressed. There is no hard data available yet, but experts believe the effects of the winter blues and SAD will be compounded in the face of the pandemic because so many people are spending this year's holidays in isolation.

This is exactly where enclothed cognition comes into play – something as simple as getting truly dressed for the day can be an instant mood lifter and have a domino effect of positive wellness benefits.

What to wear for the holidays when you're staying in

Now that we've discussed the many benefits of getting properly dressed, let's talk about how to put that to work during the holidays. Unless your family has a long-standing tradition of staying in matching Christmas pajamas all day, put on "real" clothes early in the day. It helps you get in the right mindset for whatever you're doing, whether it's having a small family meal, hosting a Zoom get-together, or even just watching holiday movies on the couch with your partner.

Your outfit doesn't necessarily have to be fancy. I've previously given tips for how to dress when you're hosting a party and many of the same rules apply here.

Comfy_Fashion Do 3x3 V2.jpg

Wear something comfortable

This includes shoes. You don't want to be too cold or hot, or spend the day adjusting straps or hiking up your bottoms. I'm a huge fan of layering long duster cardigans and as a bonus, they instantly dress up an outfit.

Flutter Sleeves_Fashion Don't_3x3 V2.jpg

Don’t wear anything fussy

For example, no long, fluttery sleeves or loads of jewelry.

Holiday Dress_Fashion Do 3x3.jpg

Go festive!

Wearing red, green, silver, or gold feel a bit extra special and can go a long way in helping you feel like this is still a “normal” holiday. The same goes for more luxe fabrics like velvet and faux leather.

Not Confident_Don't_3x3 V2.jpg

Don’t wear what you don't feel confident in.

You want to be in something you know fits you well. A special day isn't the time to debut an outfit you've never worn.

Ways to make this holiday special 2.png

I've come up with several creative ideas for sharing special moments with your family and friends this holiday season – no matter how many miles may separate you. Thanks to modern video conferencing technology (i.e., Zoom and Google Hangouts), you can still "be together" in a sense. Believe me, I know that Zoom gets tiring, but it really is one of the best ways to connect with loved ones you can't physically be with. Personally, I always feel so much better actually seeing those people I love and miss dearly, even if it is through a screen. I'll take what I can get! Here are some of the things my family is trying out this year.

Open Gifts_3x3.jpg

Open presents together

Dressed up toast_3x3.jpg

Get decked out in holiday outfits

Share a toast or even a full meal!

Crafts 3x3.jpg

Do holiday crafts together.

Have everyone purchase the same ornaments (or even better, send them out as early Christmas gifts!), then set a time to personalize them together. You could also do something similar with stockings, wreaths, or even cookies.

Christmas Sweater_3x3.jpg

Have an ugly sweater contest

Scratch off_3x3.jpg

Send everyone scratch-off tickets.

Scratch them together to see if anyone is a big winner!

Remember, to get the most out of the holidays this year, get dressed – fully dressed, hair, makeup, the whole deal! Keeping up with traditions and even creating new ones has never been more important. I hope these tips are helpful, and I'd love to hear how you're celebrating the holidays! Connect with me on Facebook or tag me in your Instagram photos and stories @therealchachaolivia.

From my family to yours, I wish you a heartfelt happy holidays!

My top "splurge worthy" items for any woman's closet.

Theo Pace

IMG_5980.jpeg

Splurge…an act of spending money freely or extravagantly.

Our move to Florida, from New England, caused a huge upheaval in my style and wardrobe. I think about how I spent my money and what I splurged on in the past. As I weeded through my New England clothes, half my wardrobe was no longer necessary. The good news…my past “splurchases” continue to be tried and true! That’s why I feel this list can apply no matter where you live!

Splurging doesn’t mean you have to spend top dollar. It just means that if something will stand the test of time, I would recommend spending a little more on it. These are the items that are worth the extra money because they are timeless, you will go back to them over and over.

A classic style. Ralph Lauren. It doesn’t have to be this extravagant but this is a good example of a timeless splurge that will last.

A classic style. Ralph Lauren. It doesn’t have to be this extravagant but this is a good example of a timeless splurge that will last.

A Quality Handbag (or two).

I have found any handbag that I treated as an “investment” has stood the test of time. It doesn’t have to be a “name brand.” A beautifully crafted leather bag, in black or neutral, can work with pretty much every outfit you wear. Good quality ensures that it will hold up and it will be a long time before it gives out on you. Of course, changing out a bag on a daily basis can be a bit of a chore, so my thought is to have one for Spring/Summer and one for Fall/Winter.

A Good Bra.

The support you receive from a good bra shouldn’t go unnoticed. It makes all the difference in how your tops lay. A bra that fits well can also make you look slimmer. Don’t skimp here. (Tip: Make sure you launder these according to directions so you get the most wear from them!)

Alice and Olivia.

Alice and Olivia.

A LBD.

A basic black dress is a timeless staple. Worn layered with a blazer or shawl, it can take you anywhere. I find a 3/4 sleeve fits all climates. Wear it with pumps, (open toe or closed) or boots to change the look around. This dress can, and should, be in your wardrobe for years.

A Good Quality Cashmere Sweater.

I would opt for a cardigan style. Wearing one over a blouse or tee can vary the look. I would work with neutrals or black to get the most use from this splurge. By sticking to the basic colors you will never tire of them. If you were to purchase a cashmere sweater in a bright color, its life span could be short lived. There’s nothing worse than spending a lot of money on something that feels “like a one and done!”

Kate Spade.

Kate Spade.

A Classic Pump.

Depending on your lifestyle, I would choose a comfortable heel. Remember to walk around a bit when trying on shoes. Just because a shoe is expensive doesn’t mean it’s more comfortable. I do suggest leather uppers and lowers for the most comfort and quality.

A good black blazer and my favorite jeans!

A good black blazer and my favorite jeans!

A Black or Navy Blazer.

Any great quality linen or wool gab blazer can last for years. It can be paired with denim, for a more casual look, or pair it back with trousers for a more crisp look. I often talk about completing an outfit with a 3rd piece and a blazer is the perfect 3rd item to complete any look!

A Pair Of Fabulous Fitting Jeans.

Just recently I was thinking that I couldn’t remember the last time I purchased a pair of jeans! I kept thinking “I must look for a new pair.” As I started to work on this blog, I thought…”why do I need a new pair?” My Joe’s jeans fit the bill for almost everything! They go with many heel heights and are a great wash. I already have the perfect pair. Even though it was a splurge at the time of purchase, these don’t owe me a penny!

Snapseed (11).jpg

A Leather Jacket

I have had this leather blazer since the 1990’s, it’s timeless. I have worn it over turtlenecks and tee shirts, with jeans and skirts. It has grown even more supple with age and now my once “splurge” feels like a bargain!

Citizens of Humanity White Blouse. One of my favs.

Citizens of Humanity White Blouse. One of my favs.

A Basic White Blouse.

The white blouse is iconic. Pair it with jeans or trousers, flip up the collar, wear a statement necklace or scarf and elevate your style. A well made blouse can carry you for years.

A timeless wrap.

A timeless wrap.

A Wrap.

I have said it before but I never give up on scarves or wraps, even if I don’t wear it for a long time. There will inevitably be a time when I’ll pull it back out and wear it over a tee, denim jacket, sweater or blazer. It’s usually a print or pattern that captures my attention. My favorite one dates back to the early 1990’s. I guess it could be considered vintage! The quality and fabric of this item stands the test of time. Whenever I wear it I get so many compliments. I love it as much as the day I purchased it.

My Fav Black Trousers of all time. Ecru.

My Fav Black Trousers of all time. Ecru.

A Great Pair Of Black Trousers.

I’m a big fan of Ecru trousers. I haven’t found one person who can’t wear them. They come in a variety of leg styles and there is always a need for a good basic black pant. I love a pant that doesn’t fade or bag out at the knees. Quality is everything in a good pair!

There you have it. My timeless splurchases that have been with me for so long. Once these items are in your wardrobe you will have great building blocks. They become the foundation of your wardrobe. You don’t have to have these items all at once. I would recommend only purchasing the ones you absolutely LOVE. Make sure you can see yourself pulling them out for seasons to come.

If you are like me you are always finding things you love. This is where building on your wardrobe becomes more exciting. There is nothing wrong with splurging on other items, but my advice is to be confident that you won’t tire of the things you splurge on. For instance, animal prints and nautical looks are pretty common “trends” that come up seasonally, so I don’t think there is anything wrong with splurging on those once in a while. I would shy away from splurging on things like “harem pants.”

Stuck on what to splurge on? I’m happy to help…Check out Ways to Work with me!

Fashionably yours,

5 Ways to Dress for Fall When it Doesn't Feel Like Fall

Kristen Peterson

I think we can all agree that 2020 has been flat-out wacky. I'm referring to several different things of course, but in this particular context, it's the weather. In early September, a huge snowstorm blanketed a large portion of the western United States, dumping as much as nine inches of snow in some areas. Meteorologists said it was "one of the earliest snowstorms on record." There were two weeks of summer officially left! Then last week, which was November, the entire Midwest experienced an unusual heatwave with temperatures reaching the upper 70s. And let's not forget the apocalyptic "firenado" in northern California in August. Even if you live in a place where you can generally count on crisp fall weather, things can change.

To be honest, I (and I'm guessing most of you) don't really mind the warm fall temperatures – but it sure does make it difficult to get dressed for the day. You need a full-blown winter coat when you leave in the morning but by 11:00 AM, it's too warm for long sleeves. As a former New Englander who now lives in Florida, I can relate to this all too well. I would love to throw on a chunky sweater and some tall boots, but that's probably not in the cards anytime soon. Knowing that so many of you are in the same boat, I've put together my best tips for dressing for fall even when it's pushing 80 degrees.

1 Skirts V2.jpg

Skirts in fall fabrics

Nothing says fall quite like suede and corduroy, but let's be honest – those fabrics can be hot. If you're in a warm-weather climate, a great workaround for this is to wear skirts. They have that unmistakable fall look without being too warm. If a cold snap happens to come through, you can wear a pair of tights underneath or (finally) pull out your favorite tall boots. This season's fall skirts have fun details like pockets and tie-waists.

2 Sweater Vest V2.jpg

Sweater vests

Before you give me the side-eye, hear me out. Modern sweater vests have come a long way since the '70s. True, they’re absolutely retro, but in a decidedly chic sort of way. Sweater vests also complement virtually everything (really!), so it’s east to make them work for you. Go ahead – put on one of your go-to outfits, then top it with a sweater vest. I’m willing to bet you’ll be surprised by how much you like the result. I personally love the cable-knit details and button-up styles because they add interest and texture, plus they almost mimic “real” sweaters. View my latest IGTV video for different ways to wear this trend!

3 Kimonos.jpg

Lightweight kimonos

If you really can't get on board with sweater vests, give kimonos a try. As you know, I'm a huge fan of layering. Adding a third piece of clothing to any outfit really does make you look more put-together, even if you're wearing something as casual as a graphic tee and jeans. I especially love light, airy kimonos because they're chic yet comfortable and effortless and they can be worn all year. Opt for jewel tones for fall, then wear the kimono as a swimsuit coverup in the summer – voila!

4 Long Sleeved Dresses.jpg

Long-sleeved dresses

I love the balanced silhouette of a mini- or midi-dress with long sleeves. It has that classic sweaterdress look, but can be made of a much lighter material (remember, fake it 'til you make it!). Pair it with low booties and a statement necklace and you're done! This look can also be easily dressed up or down by pairing it with different jacket styles. Throw on a denim jacket or even vest for a more low-key look, or choose a peacoat or blazer for a dressier look.

Since a dress is essentially a one-piece outfit, balance is crucial. If your dress is a solid color or has a neutral print, wear statement shoes, like a pair of white ankle booties. And vice-versa, if the dress has a bold design, opt for neutral footwear.

5 Mules.jpg

Mules

I think mules must have been created by a fellow Floridian, someone who wanted to wear boots in the fall but knew they were way too heavy and hot. Whoever it was, I'd like to thank them – I love a good pair of mules. The whole front of your foot is covered so you feel like you're wearing boots, but mules are backless, so you stay nice and cool. This season, there are fabulous mules in all sorts of styles and heel heights. Pair them with cropped jeans, a skirt, or even a dress – just make sure it's something that shows off the mules' details.

I hope these transitional wardrobe tips are helpful, especially for my fellow warm-weather dwellers. Let me know which combos you try and be sure to tag me in your outfit photos on Instagram @therealchachaolivia! Stay (fashionably) cool my friends!

Happy Styling,
